Turbine has released Dungeon & Dragons Online, based off the popular PnP game. Currently I am playing it and loving the style of play working more toward cooperative rp than levels levels and more levels.
Right now I am interested in knowing if others are playing this game and if so what server? Currently I know Kat is playing on Fernia Server and I am on Sarlona. If there was enough interest I would suggest if possible for all of us (those who want to play) make it known here what server(s) they are one so we can better coordinate a group and guild formation.
If there is a lack of response I will continue to work on Sarlone, but am willing to leave my current character to get the guild together.
Thanks,
Eric

Well I would say it is but it really a matter of opinion. If you have ever played D&D with pen and paper you will find yourself in a familar place. They also use FP combat so skill is required as well, mixing elements of a shooter with a MMORPG. I like it because I played D&D along time ago and enjoy the RP and group aspect. This game is not about gaining tons of levels and crafting, its more focused on enjoying the quest the group or guild is going to partake in. More group, more people oriented than grind oriented. Since I am a casual gamer, I prefer this style anyways, I just don't have the time to grind, but I enjoy MMORPG's and the interaction between various people.

So what happens if you have a group together then somebody bails halfway through the quest? Can you just pick up another member that didn't do the first quest? What about the person that has to bail, how do they resume the quest if the next group they find has to start from the beginning?

Evey quest is rated on its estimated duration from either short, medium or long. My suggestion is that you plan what Quests you partake on by what you think you can accomplish. I never take on long quests if I know I just won't have that time set aside in one night.
I am not sure about how a member dropping and what may happen. I have been able to get into a quest after I have dropped though with no problems. I do know I have been able to get into groups while they are in the middle of a quest as well. If the person bails before the quest is finished, they will have to redo that quest. Quests are not like your typical EQ quests, they are generally grouped quests with a set list of tasks that must be completed at the time of entering that quest. If you do not succeed in all the tasks, you fail at the quest.
Its not like one of those kill 8 of these, wait 10 hours for a named to pop, and then harvest that. Its more focused on interaction within the group to accompish that unique task or quest. Some tasks are optional, so no quest has to be exactly follwed to the "T".

Ahhh maybe you will like WoW better than DDO, because its more like EQ or other MMO's. It may be more of a familar setting (gameplay wise (kill grind kill mode)). DDO is definitly not for everyone, example my brother Matt. He is an avid D&D guy just is having a hard time with the game right now. So it is a taste thing, to bad they don't offer an online trial, but only by a 1 friend invitation apon purchasing the game.
Let us know how WoW is, I have heard so many negataives, but would like a view from an insider. I was almost interested in WoW, but knew it would be the same style of gameplay of EQ. If I had more time I probably would have stuck with EQ, but I enjoy hanging out with friends, more than trying to catch up with my friends. I feel sometimes like the "challenged" kid in class that keeps getting left behind in the second grade while everyone is graduating.

First thing's first. DDO basically scalps D&D of system content but does not actually represent the intended gameplay and orientation of D&D. So don't even consider looking there for that experience, you're better off with Neverwinter Nights which has new sequels coming out.
Quick Quip: World of Warcraft is more functional than DDO. I would rather play Ryzom than either of those.
If anyone has downloaded the trial program, I have an account that can be used until 4/1/2006 (more days). I won't be playing it. The feel is painful, the gameplay is frustrating and nothing near fluid, the content is unrepresenative of D&D's purpose & potential, quite frankly, this is...
With any game, if you enjoy it, fine..great...dandy.... Do not get this game because you've played/liked D&D, because that, it is not.
What I might suggest is Neverwinter Nights 2. No subscription fees, proper turnbased gameplay when appropriate, far more less limiting factors when you're top down, easily modable/expandable/patchable/runnable/playable/customizable. We would be able to make our own modules, adventures, content, etc.
So on and so forth. I cannot in good concience actually reccomend any current MMO, as they'd waste time better spent until this next generation comes out with titles such as Pirates of the Burning Seas, Vanguard - Saga of Heroes, Star Trek Online, Star Gate Online, Huxley (Post apocalyptic MMOFPS with astounding graphics and the shittiest name ever), etc.

If I were to ultimately suggest anything for this summer, I'd aim at enjoying the real world while you can. I consider this lul in favorable content an opportunity to turn off the rig and reaquaint one's self with muscle tone and thine female's anatomy. ;)

I understand your thoughts, Matt, but I feel they did the best that they could do to balance D&D for a MMORPG settings. Its very hard to make everyone work together in a world, when D&D PnP generally makes the players feel like Heroes everytime they play. In a MMORPG, everyone wants to be a hero, but can't. Although, it is very different from any standard MMORPG out there, and is at least worth the trial to test.
As for the other MMORPGS listed, they to may be nice on paper, but until we get a chance to play them its unfair to tell everyone to wait 1 1/2 years yet for another game, that is supposed to be better. I was feeling good about Vanguard until it was going to be based on a EQ level system. I was pumped for Heros Journey but seemed as if it lacked a wide world to freely explore. The best one in development in my opinion is Darkfall. But all these games are still in development and are quite a ways away from being released. Who knows these games may not even make it out the doors with what they originally planned.
Either way check out the trial. I have another pass account so once matts is used I have mine that other users who didn't get a chance to test it can try it.
